Are moderate muslims supposed to participate in honor killings?
I saw this today and was really surprised. A muslim man in NY decapitated his wife because she asked for a divorce. That in and of itself is not that surprising--what is surprising is the fact that he was putting together a tv show aimed at getting rid of muslim stereotypes. I'm sure middle america will disregard all of its stereotypes of muslims being irrational, violent and misogynistic. Or not.

Is anyone supposed to behead their wife for any reason whatsoever?
Comments on atrocities like this are simply minimized by Muslims by saying it's not an Islamic thing but a "cultural" thing.
I say "Hogwash". Treating women as personal property has always been supported by all the Abrahamic religions and is obviously NOT anti-Islamic or they would have quashed such practices long ago.
We do not need such barbaric practices here in the west.
What the scripture says is meaningless. The only thing that matters is what can be justified by saying "My invisible friend told me it was ok"
His sword slipped...you are discriminating against his God given right to kill another.
I am glad to see that a minority community is making its voice heard in an extremely white one. I hadn't occurred to me that this voice was missing. I am tired of hearing about Hitchens and Dawkins...lets bring some new and better insights to the movement.
I look forward to reading more of your blog in the future.
All the best.
please post again soon!
Hey, I think you should check out this guy's blog oneblackatheist.blogspot.com. You may find that you're not isolated in your thoughts.
Yes, I am an Atheist who happens to also be Black. That makes three of us.
In the note at the top of the page talking about the opinions of the atheist minority, your verb does not agree. It should be "opinions of the atheist minority ARE conspicuously absent." Bad grammar in your lead doesn't help your rep as an intellectual; just trying to help.
What does moderate, in terms of the Qur'aan, mean? Can a one be moderate and still fallow Allah's book. It seems unlikely. This religion is extrime and all who live by Allah's/God's words are extrime. Does "I live according to the word of God means anything? The is no moderate as long as one accipt the words of these book as being real.
Hello, I'm not sure if you check this often any more, but I am a junior at nyu and currently writing an essay for a journalism class. I would truly appreciate it if you could email me at csm345@nyu.edu.
Here is an excerpt from the prompt:
"The core issue is whether new forms of media – on the Internet, most obviously – are making it easier or harder for people outside this group to learn about the group and whether they are changing society’s perception of the group. Are the group’s concerns being communicated better or worse? Is there more or less bias or discrimination, subtle or unsubtle, in available reports on this group now? Are the group’s affairs being more or less unfairly sensationalized or ignored? Do members of the group themselves have more or less access to the news they need about their group? And are the rest of us getting a more or less fair, accurate and reasonable portrait of them."
Thanks,
Courtney
